Big Sisters of London - 32 Years of Caring

In 1973 a group of London educators and counselors researched how a Big Sisters agency could help meet the needs of an identifies gap in service to girls aged 6 through 16.

By 1974 more community members joined and formed the first Big Sisters of London Board of Directors.

In 1976 Big Sisters of London became a member of the United Way of Greater London.

Throughout the years the cornerstone of the service has been, and continues to be, the one to one relationship of a girl and a mentor. These relationships promote positive self esteem through fun and friendship, while also helping girls identify their own strengths.

In April 1993, we purchased our house at 406 Oxford Street. Thanks to the incredibly hard work of the entire Board, and most notably Janet Stewart and Betty Ann Widdrington, we took possession of our new home in June of 1993 and were mortgage free as of July, 1994.

It is important to us that the house reflects a cheerful atmosphere and promotes the positive self-esteem of girls. Also the house is accessible so that everyone can enjoy the activities offered. Big Sister House is a house with many doors, which we like to think of as symbolic of the many options open to girls and women.

Big and Little Sisters are encouraged to use the house and garden as their own.

Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (except long weekends)
