Who are we?Big Sisters of London is a not-for-profit organization, supported, in part, by the United Way. We are in our 33rd year of providing service to young girls in the London area. Our programs are focused on helping girls develop self esteem and competencies through a one-to-one relationship with an adult female volunteer.
What is our Charitable Registration Number?
Our number is 12982 0874 RR0001.
What does it mean to be a Big Sister and how do I get started?
Big Sister's are women volunteers over the age of 18, who have made a commitment of at least one full year (3-4 hours a week) to a Little Sister. Contact us to arrange your attendance at an Information Session. You will be asked to bring three references with you, identification, and $10 for a police check. Call us to find out more details at 519-438-7065.
What sort of questions or information do you ask from potential Big Sisters on the application? For example:
Tell us about your strengths and how they could contribute to your being a good Big Sister?
What are your interests, hobbies or activities?
Please provide us with three references, 1 character (personal), 1 family, and 1 employment or eduacational (professional).
Who are Little Sisters and how do I get started?
Little Sisters are girls between the ages 6-16 who have the need of a positive female mentor in their lives. To learn more please contact us at Big Sisters of London at 519-438-7065.
What do Big Sisters and Little Sisters do when they spend time together?
After the match is made, you get down to creating a true friendship that will benefit a child…but you’ll also be surprised how the friendship will make you feel great too.
The emphasis is on no-cost/low-cost activites, such as going for a walk, talking, riding bikes, baking cookies! It is about spending time together, not about money.
How long do the matches last?
The match commitment is a minimum of one year, 3-4 hours a week. The hope is that the relationship extends far beyond that, and even beyond when the Little Sister turns 17 and graduates from the program.
What other programs do we have?
Go Girls! Healthy Bodies & Healthy Minds, Sisters in School, Matches Making Memories and Waitlist Group programming.
Who are our Board of Directors?
Our Board is comprised of 18 members of the community. Each member brings with them a variety of skills and expertise, from a diverse number of areas.
What about funding?
We receive 40% of our annual operating budget from the United Way of London and Middlesex. We are also supported by generous individuals, local businesses, and sponsors. In addition, we raise money through our three signature events: Snow Volleyball in the Winter, Gala in the Spring, and a Golf Tournament in the Fall.
How are we connected to the National Big Brother Big Sisters of Canada?
We are connected through a variety of initiatives, such as by this website, which was made possible by funding from The Muttart Foundation.
